Breast Cancer Overview

Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. Most breast cancers begin in the cells that line the ducts (small tubes that carry milk from the lobules to the nipples). This is referred to as ductal cancer. Some breast cancers, which are known as lobular cancers, begin in the lobules (the glands that make breast milk). The rest begin in other tissues within a woman’s breast. [33]

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women. [35] So you’re not alone and there is help out there.

Metastatic breast cancer means that the cancer has spread (metastasized) to distant organs, such as the bones, liver, or lungs, or to lymph nodes far from the breast. Metastatic breast cancer usually means that the cancer can’t be cured. However, treatment can still help shrink the cancer, relieve symptoms, and help you live longer.[34]
